When I was about nine I lay on my back in the summer grass, my face tilted upward toward the top of a neighbor's pine, and tried to teach our resident mocker a children's song.

It did not work.

I looked it up after I wrote the essay and while they do learn most of their songs as a juvy, they actually are lifetime learners. But this sounds like something I would have done at 9 years old and been very offended that the mocker didn't even try. 😂 You're definitely my people, Ginny!
