Great story. Where we live there is no need to encourage the "locals" to get involved. We are in a small city in the Midwest. Our home will be 100 in a year. We have all the critters we can handle. So many of the people here have dogs that the local fauna are selective about where they forage and reside. Our only complaint is the squirrels raiding the bird feeders.
Hmmm...that brought a chuckle, and a memory of pulling the grill cover off to one evening, to find one of your wash bears curled up in the open compartment below the drip pan he was feasting from. He was unimpressed with my intrusion on his nap time, and left surly...protesting as he waddled down the stairs.
