I love the noise. Like crows and jays, they tell me what's going on in the neighborhood. I love their conversations as a couple (bluebirds do this, too, but it is different) and my heart soars with them when they announce the fledging of their offspring. A silent day sparks fear for our resident couple: Where are they? Are they OK? Has something happened?

This is an answer to the question I SHOULD have asked, which is, why do you love hearing red-shouldered hawks. And it is perfect, "I never thought of it that way" answer.

At my house, the red-tailed hawks keep the RSHs at bay and on the other side of the neighborhood. So on the rare occasion when they soar over my house chatting, my heart jumps in my throat. I hear alarm call and worry about what's happening outside. Are my birds safe? What's happening??!! And I race outside only to be irritated that I reacted to an RSH. LOL. It's all life experience and where it takes you!

I hear red-shouldered several times a week. They seem to always be around here, and used to nest in the large palm in our yard. They haven’t in the last few years, but they’re still around. Thanks for writing 😁
